Chiropractic Care & Pregnancy
Pregnancy can be a time of joy, excitement and great anticipation. However, women experience changes in their body both structurally and hormonally that affect the spine, nerves, joints and ligaments from the moment of conception. These stresses in a pregnant woman can cause subluxations in the mother’s spine (most notably in the pelvis) and lead to interference in the communication pathway between the brain and the body.
When a subluxation of the pregnant woman’s pelvis occurs, there can be increased tension and torsion on the ligaments that support the uterus. This unequal tugging and pulling will cause the uterus to become unbalanced (oftentimes leading to mal-positioning of the baby) and can even reduce the amount of room needed in the uterus for proper growth and development of the baby. This is called intrauterine constraint. The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces interference to the nerve system, facilitates balance in the pelvic muscles and ligaments, and in turn reduces constraint to the woman’s uterus allowing the baby to get into the best possible position for birth.
Gentle and specific chiropractic adjustments to a woman’s entire spine throughout pregnancy can help restore the communication pathways for both mother and baby. This allows for more comfort during pregnancy, easier labor and delivery, and a healthier baby.
Our office has a passion to care for the special needs of pregnant women. All chiropractors are trained to care for these groups of people, but very few pursue post-graduate training for prenatal chiropractic. Dr. Kristi is currently a Fellow of the International Chiropractic Pediatrics Association and is certified in the Webster Technique for pregnancy.
